Fullerton College Hosts Closing the Latino Opportunity Gap Summit

FULLERTON (Oct. 13, 2014) – Fullerton College will host the 6th annual Closing the Latino Opportunity Gap Summit on Friday, Oct. 17. The summit aims to identify and discuss issues related to Latino educational attainment; provide examples of promising practices, and establish educational blueprints to move from dialogue to action to address the Latino opportunity gap in Orange County. More than 400 educators, elected officials, parents, and community members are expected to attend.

The day-long summit has an impressive line-up of speakers and other panelists, including Dr. Jeff Duncan-Andrade, who is an associate professor of Raza Studies and Education at San Francisco State University, and co-founder of the Teaching Excellence Network. Additionally, Dr. Jose Moreno, an associate professor in Chicano & Latino Studies at Cal State Long Beach and Anaheim City School Board member, will provide data on Orange County demographics.

“We are pleased to host the Closing the Latino Opportunity Gap Summit for the second time,” said President Rajen Vurdien. “Gatherings like this summit are vital to developing long-lasting solutions and more ways to serve our Latino community.”
Fullerton College previously hosted the summit in 2010 and it has rotated each year between Cal State Fullerton, Chapman University, Saddleback College and XYZ.

“This year, we changed the focus of our summit from Closing the Latino Achievement Gap to Closing the Latino Opportunity Gap, acknowledging a shift in our focus to ‘assets v. deficits,’ ” said summit chair Adela Lopez. “We want to address the gaps that undermine the achievement of Latino students throughout the Orange County.”
