Fullerton College Takes Top Awards at End of the Year CSUF Blumer Invitational
Fullerton College competitors took top awards at the 26th Cal State Fullerton Blumer Speech and Debate Tournament on Saturday, May 5.
In the novice debate division, the team of Leila Majd-Faridi and Daniel Herrera-Garcia faced off against fellow Fullerton College competitors Mohammad Abdullah and Myra Habib in the final round, with both teams entering the match up with 3-0 records. In a competitive contest, the final result was a 2-1 decision with Majd-Faridi and Herrera-Garcia finishing first place while Abdullah and Habib finished second place.
Other debate highlights include the team of Maceo Coleman and Naveen Wolf taking first place in the open/varsity division, while teammates Osmar Arias and Julius Menendez finished third place in the novice division. Both teams finished their preliminary rounds with 3-0 records. Menendez, Arias, and Majd-Faridi also finished in the top 10 best speakers while Herrera-Garcia and Abdullah earned third and second-best speaker awards respectively.
In individual events, Remington Lewis finished in third place while teammate Johnathan Edwards finished first place in impromptu speaking. This was Edwards’s first time competing in a speech and debate competition.
The team resumes competition again in the Fall. The Fullerton College Speech and Debate team is coached by Jeff Samano, Toni Nielson and Jeanette Rodriguez. Students interested in joining the team in the Fall of 2018 should enroll in Communication Studies 138.
