The Cadena Cultural and Transfer Center has seen a steady increase in the number of students visiting their office for assistance this semester due to the upcoming California State University and University of California systems priority application deadline on Nov. 30.
“Since late September, we’ve been offering workshops and counseling specifically designed to address questions about the application process,” said Cadena Cultural and Transfer Center Director Cecilia Arriaza. “Our services include drop-in application assistance, appointments for essay and personal insight question reviews, and extended hours.”
The Center typically offers individual appointments and workshops and created a four-part transfer workshop series that covers the initial planning stages of the transfer process all the way up to what happens after students apply and admissions decisions.
Arriaza said the remaining workshops this semester include Part 2: (Applying to the CSU and Part 3: After You Apply. Part 4: Admissions Decisions will be held in the spring. The final Part 2 workshop will be held Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 5 – 7 p.m. in the Career and Life Planning Center in Building 2000, 2nd Floor and is full, however an additional UC workshop has been added on Nov. 20 at 5 p.m. Students must RSVP to attend. Workshops for Part 3 are listed on the Transfer Center calendar.
“The CSU and UC applications are very involved,” Arriaza said. “The CSU can take two hours or more in some cases to complete, and the UC requires responses to four personal insight questions of 350 words each. So students must take their time to write thoughtful responses and plan ahead.”
She said students must have coursework from every institution attended and their transcripts on-hand when completing the application, and most importantly should not wait until Nov. 30 to submit as the system often overloads and can experience glitches and slow processing.
Still, the Transfer Center staff is prepared to help as many students as possible she said. To assist even further, the Center offers extended hours on Tuesdays until 7 p.m. and will be open specifically for application assistance on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
