6th Annual Males Achieving Success Conference Held in Partnership with Chapman University
The Office of Educational Partnerships and Outreach in partnership with Chapman University held the 6th annual Males Achieving Success (MAS) Conference on Jan. 11. Nearly 600 high school males from four local high school districts (Anaheim Union, Fullerton Joint Union, Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified, and Whittier Union High School Districts) attended the conference this year. This was the first time the conference was held on another campus and turned out to be well received by many students who had never visited Chapman University in Orange.
“Chapman University was a great partner in hosting our 6th annual MAS conference,” said Outreach Faculty Coordinator Rolando Sanabria. “Students were greatly appreciative to be exposed to the beautiful campus and many said they were now considering Chapman University as a college option.”
The MAS conference is geared toward inspiring boys and young men of color to pursue higher education by providing them with tools, options, and resources to build confidence in preparing for college and adulthood.
Students were welcomed to the event with an opening ceremony and keynote with bilingual Content Creator and award-winning Creative Director Mike Alfaro. Alfaro is the creator of “Millennial Loteria,” a modern update to the classic Latinx card game that became a No. 1 Best Seller and sold out at every Target store in America. Students then attended a variety of conference workshops on topics surrounding career exploration, personal finances, overcoming challenges, and goal setting, and were treated to an outdoor lunch.
“The conference and partnership with Chapman went so well, we are exploring the possibility of hosting a female empowerment conference later this Spring,” Sanabria said.
The Office of Educational Partnerships and Outreach at Fullerton College works with local high school districts to transition students to Fullerton College by coordinating counseling services, application and financial aid workshops, and a variety of other onboarding activities.
