Abesamis Presents at Statewide Student Leadership Conference
In October 2022, the California Community Colleges Student Affairs Association (CCCSAA) hosted the annual Student Leadership Conference in San Diego. Student Life and Leadership Director, Dr. Naomi Abesamis co-presented two workshop sessions with colleague and Director of Student Life at Chabot College, Arnold Paguio.
The workshop titled “Leadership Inspired S.H.I.E.L.D. (Student Heroes Investing in Exemplary Leadership Development) touched on practice-to-theory-practice (PTP), covering culturally relevant leadership theories and frameworks to support and affirm authentic leadership for students from marginalized groups. The sessions were attended by more than 100 students from northern and southern California community colleges, including Fullerton College A.S. leaders.
Participants engaged in a mindfulness activity while creating their own leadership inspired shield. At the end of the workshop, students shared their personal leadership shields, were given gold leadership pins, and were reminded that “unity is a superpower.”
Abesamis and her team of classified professionals along with A.S. Faculty Advisor Joe Carrithers also attended the statewide conference.
