Fullerton College Joins California Community Colleges for Black Student Success Week | April 24 – 28

Fullerton College will participate in the statewide Black Student Success Week (BSSW) from April 24 – 28. This year’s theme is “Vision to Action: Building Systems and Structures for Black Student Success.” The focus of the week-long event will be on successful approaches to ensuring Black and African American students succeed at California community colleges.

The campus community has numerous opportunities to participate in workshops, statewide webinars, engagement activities, and networking sessions.

The State Chancellor’s Office will host daily webinars throughout the week from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. titled “The Black Hour” as well as a series of daily small group discussion forums designed for practitioners called “The After Party” from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. daily. There will also be a “Student Hour” webinar series daily from 5 – 6 p.m  Register now for all statewide BSSW events.

The Office of Student Development and Engagement at Fullerton College has also put together a list of workshops, activities, and social gatherings that will be offered to the campus community throughout the week.

“I invite the campus community to join me by participating in the statewide opportunities and those activities hosted on our campus community to help strengthen support for our Black and African American students,” said President Cynthia Olivo.

Monday, April 26

Let Me Wear My CROWN Unbothered

This is a two-part event that will include presentation and panel components. The first part is a presentation that will cover the history of textured hair, recent events/court cases, and anecdotes related to textured hair from a cultural and career lens. The event will then follow up with a panel discussion on April 25.

Join President Cynthia Olivo to view the statewide webinar #TheBlackHour in PCR-A. This session will explore the various intersectional identities of our Black students in California community colleges. As historic investments and opportunities to engage a diverse group of specialized populations have increased, we understand that our Black students check off many of those boxes. From socioeconomically disadvantaged students, former foster youth, and justice-impacted students, the Black student experience is not monolithic.

Ethnic Studies 50th Celebration

#TheBlackHour: The Diaspora Dialogues: Educators’ Reflections from Ghana

This session will explore the reflections from our faculty members who attended the historic all-African Diasporic Summit with A2MEND. This reflection is an opportunity for faculty to express their respective experiences from a personal and professional perspective. Faculty will share their introspective reflections as well as how they have adapted their experiences into their curriculum and pedagogy as practitioners.

USC and Cal State LA Tour
