Fullerton College Named 2023 Champion for Excelling in Equitable Course Placement
Fullerton College has been named a 2023 Champion for Excelling in Equitable Course Placement by the Campaign for College Opportunity. As part of the 2nd annual Excellence in Placement awards, Fullerton College is among 56 California Community Colleges being recognized as a top performer with three awards granted in the following categories:
- Campuswide Transfer-Level English Enrollment – Fullerton College successfully supported 100 percent of students to enroll directly in transfer-level English coursework.
- Equity Designation: Latinx Transfer-Level English Enrollment – Fullerton College successfully supported 100 percent of Latinx students to enroll directly in transfer-level English coursework.
- Equity Designation: Black Transfer-level English Enrollment – Fullerton College successfully supported 100 percent of Black students to enroll directly into transfer-level English coursework.
“At Fullerton College, we are committed to providing every student with a learning environment that is welcoming, inclusive, supportive, and one that advances student success and equity. We are honored to be recognized by the Campaign for College Opportunity. These awards are a testament to the work of our faculty, staff, and administrators, especially those in our English Department and Humanities Division who are dedicated to advancing equitable outcomes for all students, but particularly our Black and Latinx students. Please join me in celebrating this extraordinary achievement,” said President Cynthia Olivo.
The Campaign for College Opportunity will honor community college campuses for implementing landmark placement policy AB 705 (Irwin) which was signed into law in 2017. Prior to AB 705, the vast majority of incoming community college students were being placed into remedial math and English courses that ultimately discouraged and derailed students on their college journeys. Over a decade of research has shown that students’ likelihood of earning a degree decreases when they start college in remedial courses.
“As we celebrate the record number of California community colleges that are placing students in transfer-level courses, we must remember that equity and success for all students, particularly Black and Latinx students, must be at the forefront of our efforts. These colleges are leading the way in providing equitable access to higher education and ensuring that we break down barriers to student success,” said Michele Siqueiros, president of the Campaign for College Opportunity.
The Campaign for College Opportunity will formally recognize Fullerton College at the 2023 Excellence in Placement Awards Ceremony on May 31 in Downtown Los Angeles.
