Annual Día De Los Muertos Celebration Returns Oct. 26
Fullerton College’s beloved tradition of celebrating Día De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is set to take place on October 26 at 5 – 8 p.m. on the campus quad. Fullerton College and the Cadena Cultural Center invites students, families and the community to experience a free evening of music, performances, food, activities, and vibrant displays of ofrendas (altars) created and assembled by members of the Fullerton College community.
Día De Los Muertos at Fullerton College has been an annual celebration for more than 27 years. Many of the traditions that began at Fullerton College over two decades ago will again take stage at this year’s event, including Aztec dancers, ballet folklórico, face painting, and a community ofrenda.
Many courses taught at Fullerton College also incorporate educational components of Día De Los Muertos.
“The event has a long history of collaborating with academic divisions and departments such as Ethnic Studies, Sociology, Counseling and Student Development, and student programs like Puente, EOPS and Associated Students to incorporate educational and community building pieces” said Cadena Cultural Center Coordinator Gilberto Valencia.
The campus community also has a chance to learn about the history of Día De Los Muertos with a traditional ofrenda on display at the entrance of the Library. The display will be available through Nov. 2.
The Día De Los Muertos Celebration is a family-friendly event. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own blankets and chairs to view performances on the quad and bring a photo of a loved one to add to the community altar.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. and free parking will be available in the parking structure located on the corner of Lemon Street and Fullerton College Drive.
