Fullerton College Crime Lab Expands Student Opportunities

Dr. Cynthia Olivo, Dr. Gilbert Contreras, Ken Starkman, Kelly Robertson, Letty Ramirez and other dignitaries welcomed the Crime Lab to Fullerton College with an exciting ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The administration of justice department at Fullerton College officially opened its Crime Lab with an exciting ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 17. The ceremony included students, faculty, staff and community partners with opening remarks by President Dr. Cynthia Olivo and other dignitaries. The event showcased a mock crime scene, an investigation demonstration and a lab tour.

The Crime Lab provides administration of justice and biotechnology students with practical field experience through realistic mock scenarios set up by faculty. The lab also offers students interested in these disciplines the opportunity to pursue a crime scene investigation (CSI) or forensic technician certificate.

The Crime Lab invited students, staff and faculty for tours to explore the space’s realistic elements of a mock crime scene.

The Crime Lab was made possible by Professor of Administration of Justice, Kelly Robertson, Dean of Fullerton College’s Technology and Engineering Division, Kenneth Starkman and Fullerton Police Department Forensics Supervisor and Administration of Justice Faculty, Letty Ramirez. Together, the team worked on their vision to create an immersive space offering students a hands-on component to their CSI courses. The project aimed to provide students with real-world knowledge and skills in order to excel in the workforce.

Administration of Justice Professor, Kelly Robertson, played an instrumental role in launching this space in efforts to provide our students with the hands-on experience to be crime scene investigators, just as she once was.

“The combination of technology and science in the criminal justice profession has created a new generation of CSI and forensic investigators,” said Kelly Robertson. “Our goal is to support our students on their educational journey and career pathways.”

Fullerton College is proud to present the Crime Lab as a place that gives students the hands-on experience required to make their dream careers a reality.
