STEM Center Grand Opening Bolsters Excitement and Student Achievement

The Division of Natural Sciences recently welcomed its new STEM Center with an exciting grand opening celebration. Home to the MESA Program at Fullerton College, the STEM Center provides students with special opportunities, a study space and onsite mentorship.

The Grand Opening featured exciting programming the included a tour of the space. MESA Program staff gathered with Dr. Olivo, our special guests and Buzzy.

“The STEM Center builds community, identity and skills for students during their academic journey while supporting their academic success and professional development via tutoring services, workshops and experiential learning opportunities.” said Director of the MESA Program, Dr. Carlos Aguirre.

The celebration began with opening remarks by President Olivo, followed by a message from Dr. Aguirre. Fullerton College STEM alumni also shared words of gratitude for the space, while current MESA students also spoke on their success thanks to the experiences provided by the center.

“At the beginning of the semester, I was the first person to use the STEM Center and since then, everyone has been super welcoming. They want to help support you on your STEM journey through tutors, biological models, workshops and a great study space.” said student Ryan Ebert. “I am so grateful that this space exists for STEM students. MESA offers a great community where you feel connected to your peers and to opportunities. I would highly recommend utilizing the STEM Center and all the amazing things it offers.”

Guest speaker Jamarius Reid, a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) engineer, was also invited to present an impactful keynote speech that encouraged students to never give up and to follow their dreams.

NASA Engineer Jamarius Reid shared his story in two parts, both highlighting his journey to success.

The ceremony also held two physics demonstrations by Physics Professor, Dr. Seung Ji. The first demonstration featured the hammering of cinder blocks, while the second was all about sound frequency and imaginary sounds. The demonstrations were accompanied by the breaking of a piñata, where students lined up to partake in the festivity.

The power of physics: Buzzy breaks a hammer on cinder blocks on Dr. Seung Ji’s abdomen. The hammer took the impact, leaving Dr. Ji unharmed.

Attendees were also invited to tour the center and explore its wealth of resources.

“The MESA program has provided me with opportunities that I had honestly never dreamed possible. I had the privilege of attending a hackathon at Princeton University because of this program. Had it not been for them, I would’ve never experienced what was out there. In the one semester that I’ve been in this program, my experience as a student has been enhanced greatly,” said student Jason Hong.

“The STEM Center has been a vital resource in my journey. During these past few months, I’ve been applying to internships and summer research programs, and being able to meet regularly with Dr. Aguirre has been a game changer.” said student Maryam Dallawar. “He’s shown me how to search for programs, looked over my applications and helped me draft a resume. The tutoring and office hours have also been an incredible support as I’m navigating college science classes and wouldn’t know who else to ask.”

The STEM Center was made possible after faculty volunteered their office spaces to make the center possible for our students.

This grand opening marks a new beginning where students can receive the support they need to grow their skills and knowledge while securing a career in their desired field. The STEM Center is located in Building 1200, Room 1246.
