Art Alumna Georgette Collard Gives Back to Museum Community

For Georgette Collard, a career marked by cultural enrichment, preservation and community became possible thanks to the museum studies program at Fullerton College. After completing her associate’s degree in art history in 2019 and a museum studies certificate in 2024, Collard now gives back to her community as museum curator for the Fullerton Museum Center.

One of Collard’s favorite memories at Fullerton College is working on the exhibit for Pavel Acevedo and incorporating foliage into his artwork. Having never done that before, it was really fun for her to experiment with everyone in class.

As leader of a smaller institution, Collard’s career encompasses a wide range of opportunity. From overseeing the museum’s collection to planning exhibitions and installations, she also develops concepts and leads public engagement efforts. An expert in the field, her multifaceted role also allows her to integrate scholarship, creativity and community engagement in support of the museum’s ongoing growth and accessibility.

During her time at Fullerton College, she was inspired by the guidance and mentorship of Art Professor Carol Henke and Art Gallery Technician Seija Rohkea.

“[Henke] guided me through the program and supported me every step of the way, helping me build meaningful connections with other institutions. I truly would not be where I am today without her,” said Collard. “Seija Rohkea has also been an instrumental influence in my life, not only for teaching me the essential hard skills required in this field, but also for being a genuinely positive mentor who is deeply committed to her students’ success.”

Collard’s commitment to pay it forward as a mentor has been reflected in her efforts to connect with the local community. She recently made an inspiring appearance at Fullerton Union High School’s Museum Studies Club with Rohkea and Museum Studies Professor, Jasmine McNeal. During this visit, the team shared many details about the field, motivating high school students with tips on how to stay motivated and focused on their professional goals.

Fullerton College’s Museum Studies Department is ready to serve future students and make their dreams a reality.

Collard’s story is an example of the success cultivated at Fullerton College. A community leader and mentor, she is excited to continue inspiring future generations and showing the world the exciting careers that museum studies encompass.

Collard shares a special message for Fullerton College students to “be reliable and integrous in everything [they] do.”
