London Study Abroad Deadline Approaching

Students interested in studying abroad next spring have a little less than six weeks to start planning their trip to study abroad in London this upcoming spring.

The last London 2016 study abroad information session will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in Building 200, Room 224. The info. session will cover participation requirements, cost, available courses, activities, and financial aid. The deadline to apply for study abroad next spring is Nov. 6.

Study abroad students have a unique opportunity to complete transferable courses while experiencing the rich and diverse culture of a foreign country. This spring the program will travel to London, England to visit historic places such as Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace town of William Shakespeare, while completing courses in English and history, such as British Literature, Survey of British History, and Introduction to Film Studies.

“It’s a once-in-a-life-time experience that you’ll cherish for the rest of your life,” said FC student Essence McKowan. She was among a group of students who traveled to Rome last spring. “Studying abroad allowed me to view different ways of life and understand and appreciate different cultures.”

McKowan is in her final year at FC and said the Study Abroad Program enhanced her education about Italian filmmaking. She plans to transfer to Cal State Long Beach as a film major next fall.

Through the North Orange County Community College District, Fullerton College and Cypress College students who have completed 12 units of college-level coursework, including English 100 (College Writing) or equivalent with a grade “C” or better, and have a 2.5 GPA are eligible to study abroad.

Information sessions, financial aid, and application workshops have been taking place since last spring. According Professor Doug Eisner, Study Abroad Program coordinator, scholarships and funding are available for students interested in the trip to London. “Students can receive up to $5,000 through the Gilman scholarship and many students aren’t aware that funding is available to them.  All you have to do is apply.”

The deadline to apply for the Gilman scholarship is Oct. 6. More information can be found at www.iie.org/programs/gilman-scholarship-program

In addition, the Study Abroad Program will host two remaining workshops on financing a study abroad trip. The remaining workshops are on Oct. 12 at 4:30 p.m. in Room 224 and Oct. 14 at 7:15 p.m. in Room 224.

Students interested in the Study Abroad Program can obtain more information by attending the information session on Sept. 30 or by contacting Doug Eisner at (714) 992-7308.
