NOCCCD Counselors Share Ideas at District In-Service

Close to 100 counselors from all three schools of the North Orange County Community College District gathered at Fullerton College for the first District Counselor In-Service on Feb. 24. The full-day of activity included highlights from the three campuses, academic presentations, small group discussions, and created a forum for counselors to strengthen collegial relationships with one another.

“Now more than ever with legislation such as the Student Success Support Program (SSSP), it’s vital for counselors to stay current on district and campus polices, academic programs, and collaborate to help establish student-centered procedures on our respective campuses,” said Counselor and Department Coordinator Flor Aguilera-Huerta.

Aguilera-Huerta spearheaded the program and activities for the first District Counselor In-Service as a way to provide professional development and create an open space where counselors could facilitate communication and invite instructional faculty to share information about Fullerton College programs she said.

The day’s agenda included welcome presentations from deans at Cypress College, Fullerton College, and the School of Continuing Education. Faculty also presented on several Fullerton College academic programs including, child development, cosmetology, and paralegal studies.

Aguilera-Huerta said the cross-training of academic-programs and services is vital to the success of all counselors in the district. “Our goal as counseling faculty is to support our district’s mission: To help our campuses cultivate services that provide comprehensive programs and provide educational opportunities for students.”

Future plans will be to host the District Counselor In-Service annually by rotating the site locations around the three campuses, creating the opportunity for counselors at each site to share activities and programs unique to their respective campuses. For more information, contact 714-992-7242.
