Fullerton College Debaters Take Top Awards at CA Swing Tournament

Fullerton College debaters competed against teams from CSUN, CSUF, and Irvine Valley College. The back-to-back “California Swing Tournament” was a warm up for the upcoming National championship, being hosted at Fullerton College on March 11 and 12.

Friday, Fullerton College debaters went 1-2-3-4 in Policy Debate with Joseph Phillips and Michael Wu winning finals over second place teammates Kitiny Phumchun and Iris Chu. Andrea O’Laughlin and Hailey Kwon took third, edging teammates Henry Grow and James Huber. Zach Turner and Ryan Martinez and Fullerton College teammates Brian Wheat and Rohan Shah went 1-2 in Public Forum Debate.

Top speaker awards went to Iris Chu, Andrea O’Laughlin, and  Michael Wu.

Saturday, Kitiny Phumchun and Iris Chu defeated a team from CSUF to take first overall. Rohan Shah and Brian Wheat were 3rd, edging teammates Ryan Martinez and Zach Turner. Former FC debater Daniel Boughter took top-speaker for CSUF, while Iris Chu took 3rd speaker.

In Sweepstakes, Fullerton College took first overall, followed by CSUF and Irvine Valley College.
