Fullerton College Celebrates National Latinx Heritage Month 2018
Fullerton College will help celebrate National Latinx Heritage Month with several events and workshops that honor the contribution of the Latinx community. Most events begin in mid-September and run through October, with some extending further into the semester.
Hosted by the Cadena Cultural Center, the 10th annual Latinx Students Forum will be held on Sept. 19 in Building 200, Room 224 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. The forum is supported by the Fullerton College Puente Project which provides an academic, counseling, and mentoring program for under-served students. The forum is designed to cultivate connections among Latinx students and discuss topics of importance for Latinx students pursuing higher education.
Following the forum, the Cadena Cultural Center will take students on a cultural tour of La Plaza de Cultura y Artes and Los Angeles’ historic Olvera Street on Friday, Oct. 12. La Plaza de Cultura y Artes is the nation’s premier center of Mexican-American culture with a specific focus on the unique Mexican-American experience in Los Angeles and Southern California. The Fullerton College Library will also be exhibiting a banned Latinx authors display until Oct. 15 in honor of Latinx Heritage Month and Banned Books Week.
The Latino Faculty and Staff Association are hosting a few events in September and October. The association will host a screening of Dolores on Friday, Sept. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Anaheim Campus, Room 105/107. This film, directed by director Peter Bratt, follows the life of Dolores Huerta as an activist for the Latinx community fighting for racial justice and labor rights. There will also be a screening of My Crazy Life on Friday, Oct. 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Anaheim Campus. This movie focuses on the life of Latinx and Chicanx youth growing up in Echo Park during 90’s. Both of these events will have free popcorn and soda, and a question and answer session after the movie.
Along with the screenings, the Latino Faculty and Staff Association is also holding a Noche con los Padres workshop in Spanish designed for parents to learn about the higher education system in the United States and how they can support their children. This workshop is on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. at the Anaheim Campus, Room 105. A flyer in Spanish for this event can be downloaded here.
Lastly, Fullerton College’s Ethnic Studies Department is excited to host the annual Dia De Los Muertos celebration on Thursday, Oct. 25. The Mexican holiday, which focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember those who have died, will be celebrated with music, lively demonstrations, and elaborate altars adorning the quad from 6:30 to 10 p.m. The event is open to the community.
