Students Connect with Resources and Volunteer Opportunities at CommUNITY Day
For the fourth year in a row, the Cadena Cultural and Transfer Center has teamed up with Associated Students, the Umoja Center and the Service Learning Program to bring to life CommUNITY Day, a welcome event designed to celebrate African American History Month, connect students with campus resources, and encourage them to take active roles in their community through volunteer opportunities that exist on and off campus.
This year’s CommUNITY Day will be held on February 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the quad.
“We believe that students benefit by exposing them to the educational and social networks that can foster their success and enhance their educational and social experience at Fullerton College,” said Vincent White, who serves as coordinator in the Cadena Cultural and Transfer Center.
During the event, students will have opportunities to visit with many academic programs, student clubs, campus resources, and local non-profit organizations to learn about ways to get involved. The event is also a kick-off celebration to African American History Month and embraces Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call for community service, emphasizing “community” and “unity” at Fullerton College and in the local community.
“Students have the opportunity to gain valuable experiences through volunteering within the Fullerton community,” White said. “Along with the transformative benefits volunteering provides, students can show their philanthropic spirit on applications for highly competitive universities.” The event will also host information tables for a few local CSU’s and UC’s.
In addition, students will have the chance to learn more about the Service Learning Program at Fullerton College which gives students the chance to volunteer in the community while gaining an understanding of civic responsibility. Through the Service Learning Program students can typically earn 20 to 100 service hours during their participation in the program and are recognized for reaching specific service learning hour milestones. The program has developed partnerships with more than 50 non-profit organizations throughout Southern California, some who will be in attendance during the event.
