Corey Lamb Awarded Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship
Corey Lamb builds on an esteemed legacy at Fullerton College by being awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship worth up to $40,000 a year to complete a bachelor’s degree at a four-year university.
Lamb is completing an associate degree in sociology and has been accepted to all of the UC campuses he’s applied to including his top university of choice University of California, Berkeley, but is also waiting to receive an acceptance letter from Stanford University, before making his final decision.
Sixty-one high achieving community college students were awarded scholarships from a competitive nationwide pool this year. All of the Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholars have financial need and strong records of academic achievement as shown by grades, leadership skills, awards, extraordinary service to others and perseverance in the face of adversity.
In addition to the monetary award, Cooke Transfer Scholars will receive comprehensive educational advising from foundation staff to guide them through the process of transitioning to a four-year school and preparing for their careers. The foundation will additionally provide opportunities for internships, study abroad, and graduate school funding, as well as connection to a thriving network of nearly 2,500 fellow Cooke Scholars and alumni.
“Our recent ‘Persistence’ report highlights the vast potential, and achievements, of community college transfer students – who go on to outperform their non- transfer peers at selective four-year institutions,” said Seppy Basili, executive director of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. “In an era where many high-achieving students often begin their higher education journey in community college, the foundation is committed to enabling these transfer students to pursue their academic dreams at the nation’s top colleges and universities.”
Fullerton College has a consistent record of students applying and receiving this competitive, national award. Lamb joins many recent alumni from 2018, 2017, and years beyond in earning this award and contributing to the college’s culture of transfer success. Nearly 1,500 students applied for the 2019 Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. Lamb was selected as one of 61 students to receive the award.
Lamb began attending Fullerton College in the spring of 2016 after experiencing some difficult challenges in life. A first-generation college student, he grew up in a family that knew very little about the road to college, let alone the fact that college was attainable. After failing to graduate high school and turning to drugs and alcohol shortly after, Lamb bounced around from one job to another without any real sense of direction. That continued for much of his early adult life until he finally decided to turn his life around in 2016. Upon earning his California High School Equivalence Certificate, he enrolled in his first class at Fullerton College and began to excel.
He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, an honor society at Fullerton College, participates in EOPS Honors Alliance, a member of the Honors Program, has maintained a 4.0 GPA, and does all this while raising his 5-year old daughter Kasandra. His journey to Fullerton College was featured in the Fullerton College 2016-17 annual report.
