Fullerton College Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Each year, Fullerton College celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of cultural events designed to honor the heritage, traditions, and contributions of the Hispanic, Latino/a/x, and Chicano/a/x people. This year, the Cadena Cultural Center at Fullerton College is excited to collaborate these efforts across the North Orange County Community College District by offering a series of virtual events that focus on community engagement. Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from Sep. 16 through Oct. 14.
“This year, Fullerton College has partnered with Cypress College and North Orange Continuing Education to expand our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration,” said Cadena Cultural Center Coordinator Gilberto Valencia. “The theme of the month focuses on community engagement and will feature a variety of guest speakers and activities that highlight connection, the diversity within our communities and the call to be more involved.”
Some of the events hosted by Fullerton College include a student panel, a presentation with guest speakers to celebrate Indigenous People’s Day, and a social media campaign highlighting banned books by Hispanic, Latinx, and Chicanx authors. The events will all be held virtually and advance registration is encouraged. Fullerton College is hosting the following events:
- Student Panel on Oct. 7 from 10 – 11:30 a.m. – In this student led event, new and returning students are invited to hear directly from their peers about what it’s like to be Latino/a/x in the North Orange County Community College District. Faculty, Staff, and administrators are welcome to attend. Register for the panel here.
- Indigenous People’s Day on Oct. 11 from 4 – 5:30 p.m. – Led by the Fullerton College Ethnic Studies Department and Cadena Cultural Center, this virtual presentation will feature a multimedia keynote address and Bird Singers from Journeys To The Past. A Q&A session to follow. Register for the presentation here.
- Literary Freedom and Banned Books – The Cadena Cultural Center and the Fullerton College Library have partnered together to highlight banned books by Hispanic, Latinx, and Chicanx authors. The collaboration titled “Reclaiming our Titles” promotes literary freedom by highlighting books by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) authors, which are available through the Library’s online borrowing and curbside service. Beginning Sep. 15, the Cadena Cultural Center will share titles and brief summaries, via their Instagram, every Wednesday until Oct. 15. E-Books and Printed Copies are offered via the FC Library.
Additionally, the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration will kick off on Thursday, Sept. 16 with an Opening Day Lecture provided by East Los Angeles College professor Obed Silva who will address the topic of Hispanic community engagement. The lecture is led by Cypress College from 10 – 11:30 a.m. See a complete list of events offered throughout the month here.
