A Note From President Olivo: Tragedy in Monterey Park

Dear Fullerton College Family,

During a time that ought to be marked with celebration for the Lunar New Year, we find ourselves mourning the loss of 11 innocent lives and many others impacted by another senseless act of violence. I am devastated by the shooting in Monterey Park on Saturday night, and I am saying oraciones for all those families who lost loved ones and for all of us who feel sadness, anger, and fear.

The Asian Pacific Islander and Desi American (APIDA) Advisory & Support Team at Fullerton College, and the NOCCCD APIA Faculty and Staff Association join me in solidarity in this heartbreak. We recognize that this act of violence creates collective trauma which deeply impacts our APIDA community and our allies. We stand in solidarity with our APIDA brothers and sisters, and are here to support our APIDA students, faculty, staff, and campus community.

Please reach out to members of the college’s APIDA Advisory & Support Team for support. Download a PDF directory of APIDA Advisory & Support Team members here.

We are committed to working with our college community and community partners to prevent, stop, and respond to violence.

We join our nation in flying our United States and California flags at half-staff in honor of the victims through Thursday, January 26.

In addition, today, I met with members of the FC APIDA Advisory & Support Team and we will be following up regarding working in collaboration with Associated Students and my office to schedule an event to honor Lunar New Year next week.

In Solidarity,
Cynthia Olivo, Ph.D.
President
