Basic Skills at League for Innovation in the Community College National Conference
On March 14, Dani Wilson, dean of the Library, Learning Resources, Instructional Support Programs and Services, Kristine Nikkhoo, director of Basic Skills and Support Programs, and Bridget Kominek, English instructor and basic skills coordinator, presented on Fullerton College’s thriving Basic Skills Initiative at the League for Innovation in the Community College National Conference in San Francisco.
Their presentation, Redefining Innovation: How Scaling High-Impact Practices Influences Institutional Transformation highlighted three Basic Skills programs aimed at helping students succeed: the Entering Scholars Program (ESP), Growth Mindset Initiative, and Accelerated English. These programs, which incorporate high-impact practices such as embedded tutoring, community-building, and peer mentorship, have provided the groundwork for the college’s new Pathway Transformation Initiative (PTI) and remediation reform, which is currently enabling more FC students access to transfer-level English and math.
