Campus Book Clubs Welcome New Members

Book clubs at FC are welcoming students, faculty and staff to pick up a book and join them in conversation this semester. The clubs will explore various genres and will challenge readers with subject matter ranging from biology to social justice issues. Book clubs create a unique opportunity for the FC community to connect with one another and share in some leisurely reading. Clubs featured this fall include:

  • One Book, One College – Led by English instructor, Kim Orlijan, the group will delve into The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. This non-fiction book follows the life of Henrietta Lacks, a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells – taken without her knowledge in 1951 – became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization and more. To join the group contact korlijan@fullcoll.edu.
  • FC Leisure Reading Book Club – This small group made up of faculty, staff, and students meets once a month and reads one book per semester. Topics will vary and are determined by book club members. For more info or to join contact Deidre Hughes at dhughes@fullcoll.edu or Jane Ishibashi at jishibashi@fullcoll.edu.
  • LGBT Book Club – Hosted by the Cadena Cultural Center, this club will read and discuss What Night Brings, a fictional read that focuses on Marci, a young girl raised in a Chicano working-class family who is struggling to find and maintain her identity against all odds, while living in California during the 1960s.
