Faculty Receive Grant Funding

Fullerton College Professors Sean Chamberlin and Valerie Loew received Innovation Fund Grants to develop programs and conduct research. They were among four North Orange County Community College District faculty and staff who received grants, which totaled more than $90,000. The grants are awarded annually to help develop initiatives aimed at improving the district and its colleges.
Chamberlin, professor of earth sciences and project leader proposed Science Nuts!, an initiative focusing on closing the achievement gap in science classes by offering students the opportunity to learn basic science skills. Under this initiative, students and instructors have online access through desktop and mobile devices to a library of basic science skill videos and web resources. This project was collaborated with Fullerton College and Cypress College faculty from natural science, social science, English, mathematics, and cinema-television departments.
Loew, professor of horticulture proposed Aquaponic Skills for an Evolving Horticulture Industry, to reduce the achievement gap and provide hands-instruction for vocational, science and non-science students. The proposal calls for implementing an aquaponic system and high-impact teaching strategies in order to increase student success in the horticulture industry. It will also open up undergraduate research opportunities for science majors.
Recipients have one year to implement their proposals and will present their program’s results to the Board of Trustees.
