Fullerton College Artist in Residence 2017: Abel Alejandre

Masculinity will be on full display through the artwork of Fullerton College’s artist in resident Abel Alejandre.

An immigrant from Mexico, Alejandre came to Los Angeles, Calif. in 1975.  His family settled in Wilmington, Calif., which he considers to be his hometown.

“A nearby Boys Club of America afforded me a sanctuary wherein I could doodle, read, and play billiards.”  Says Alejandre, “It was perhaps there that my creative path began.  In time, my attraction to drawing became transformative.”

As a self-trained printmaker, Alejandre works with mediums such as graphite on paper, canvas, and wood.  His work interprets the public and private sectors of masculinity with metaphors for manhood, valor, machismo, and patriarchy.

2017 marks the 45th year Fullerton College hosts an artist in residence.  The program provides a week of events and a month long exhibit. It gives students an intimate glimpse of life as a working artist.

“Spending the week observing a professional artist expands our student’s view about their own options,” says Carol Henke, Fullerton College Art Gallery Director, “When I talk to alumni, they mark their time at Fullerton College by what artists were in residence.”

The residency will begin on March 9 with an opening reception from 5 – 7 p.m. in the Fullerton Art Gallery. An artist lecture will be held on March 14 at 7 p.m. in Wilshire Auditorium and an art demonstration will be in Room 1028 from March 13 – March 19.
