Fullerton College Celebrates Earth Week with Local Focus

Simple acts can make a world of difference. That’s why Fullerton College is taking a local focus for Earth Week (April 22-26) with a series of events designed to inform the community about the importance of protecting the things closest to home.

The week kicks off with the 8th annual Fullerton College Earth Day Symposium on April 22, an event that will dive into the health of our local watersheds in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

Ever wondered where rainwater goes after it disappears down the storm drain? Or have you been troubled by images of debris littering local beaches after winter storms? The symposium tackles these very questions, featuring panelists from Friends of the Los Angeles River (FOLAR) and the H2OC Stormwater Program. Participants will learn about the history of our local rivers with panelists sharing their journey from community college to protecting waterways.

Fullerton Creek Cleanup

The importance of waterways can be viewed right in our backyard. With the birds and wildlife that can be seen visiting Fullerton Creek, the college has officially adopted a portion of the channel. Join fellow campus community members for the inaugural cleanup on April 25 to remove trash and debris before it makes it downstream. Participants will also paint over graffiti within the channel.

Sustainability Movie Night

After a long day of cleaning up a waterway, relax with movie night on April 25. Two hour-long movies will be screened, including Watersheds, a film about the Colorado River water issues in the 21st century and who it effects. Second is LA Foodways, an episode of a documentary series focused on Los Angeles’s transition from farm to city, and where we went wrong in our access to fresh foods.

Earth Week Fair

The Office of Sustainability will also host the Fullerton College Earth Week Fair from April 23-24. Chat with vendors and organizations about the environment, ways you can volunteer and programs you can take advantage of. Participants can grab a catered rice and bean bowl and sign up for CalFresh – a program that helps people meet low-income eligibility rules and want to add to their budget to put healthy and nutritious food on the table. Additionally, students will be invited to take the first-ever Sustainability Student Survey at the Sustainability Committee booth. The survey will seek to understand how students get to campus, how they feel about campus sustainability efforts and what students know about sustainability in general.

Whether you’re curious about the journey of rainwater or passionate about the wellbeing of our local rivers and coasts, Fullerton College’s Earth Week offers an opportunity to make a real difference.
