Fullerton College Celebrates Latino Heritage Month
Fullerton College will help celebrate National Latino Heritage Month with several events and workshops that honor the contributions, struggles and successes of the Latino community. Most events begin in mid-September and run through October, with some extending further into the semester.
To kick-off the celebration, the Cadena Cultural and Transfer Center along with Associated Students will host the 12th annual ¡Bienvenidos! A Day of Welcome and Celebration on Tuesday, Sept. 13. The event is designed to inspire and encourage cross-cultural students in their quest for academic success. A resource fair is scheduled between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. where students can learn more about the variety of resources on campus and connect with instructional divisions, student support services and student-led organizations.
Also hosted by the Cadena Cultural Center, the 8th annual Latino Students Forum will be held on Sept. 27 in Building 200, Room 224 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. The forum is supported by the Fullerton College Puente Project which provides an academic, counseling, and mentoring program for under-served students. The forum is designed to cultivate connections among Latino students and discuss topics of importance for Latino students pursuing higher education.
Heading into October, Fullerton College’s Ethnic Studies Department is excited to host the annual Dia De Los Muertos celebration on Thursday, Oct. 27. The Mexican holiday, which focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember those who have died, will be celebrated with music, lively demonstrations, and elaborate altars adorning the quad from 6 to 10 p.m. The event is open to the community.
Following the Dia De Los Muertos event, the Cadena Cultural Center will take students on a cultural tour of La Plaza de Cultura y Artes and Los Angeles’ historic Olvera Street on Friday, Oct. 28. La Plaza de Cultura y Artes is the nation’s premier center of Mexican-American culture with a specific focus on the unique Mexican-American experience in Los Angeles and Southern California. Students interested in the tour can contact the Cadena Cultural Center at 714-992-7086 to RSVP.
