Fullerton College Offers New Environmental Justice Career Fellowship

A new environmental justice career fellowship will launch in spring 2025 at Fullerton College through a new partnership with the California Youth Leadership Corps and Community Learning Partnership.

Students will have the chance to work with a community-based organization, gaining hands-on experience organizing and advocating in the field of environmental justice. The nine-month fellowship offers stipends of up to $10,000 and scholarships of up to $5,000. As part of the first-ever cohort, students will receive guidance and support from faculty and peers, access to academic counseling and the opportunity to partake in exclusive enrichment events.

“Creating meaningful change begins with centering racial and economic justice, amplifying the voices of young leaders of color and supporting them as they step into leadership roles. By addressing challenges like poverty, health equity, climate justice and economic opportunity, we can help empower the next generation to strengthen their communities,” said Ericka Adakai, director of Instructional Partnerships and Programs. “Progress is possible when we come together, engage thoughtfully and build collective power to uplift marginalized voices and work toward a more equitable future. This partnership could not have come at a better time!”

This fellowship is designed to serve historically marginalized students, including low-income individuals, students of color, opportunity youth, LGBTQIA2S+, immigrants and those impacted by the criminal legal system. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students are also eligible and encouraged to apply.

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be enrolled at Fullerton College and working toward their first degree
  • Be preferably in a major related to environmental justice
  • Be between ages of 18-24; though individuals over 24 may also qualify
  • Commit to 10 hours per week (40 hours a month) of work-based learning at a designated site
  • Complete climate action and environmental justice training during the program
