Fullerton College Responds to Federal Court Ruling on DACA

Fullerton College is committed to creating access, opportunity, and safety to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students and undocumented students. The college will continue to provide resources and support to undocumented students as DACA is challenged through federal courts.

On Friday, July 16, 2021, a federal district court in Texas issued a decision negatively impacting the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which protects young undocumented individuals from deportation and allows them to work lawfully in the United States. The ruling halts new DACA applications from being submitted. The ruling does not impact the standing of students currently protected by the program and will allow DACA renewals to proceed while the case goes through the court appeals process.

The Justice Department, at the direction of the Biden Administration, is appealing the decision and President Biden is calling on Congress to find a permanent solution.

“Fullerton College stands with our DACA and undocumented students and their families and recognizes the irreplaceable presence and contributions these students make to our campus and community,” said Acting President Dr. Gilbert Contreras. “In this uncertain environment, Fullerton College will continue to provide unwavering support for undocumented students. Our DACA and undocumented students are members of our community and the Fullerton College family. As a community institution, we will live up to our mission, our vision, and our core values and embrace our responsibility to lead with love.”
