Fullerton College Welcomes Author Rafael Augustín For Undocumented Student Action Week
Fullerton College is excited to welcome back alumnus, author, and speaker Rafael Augustín on Oct. 16 at 5 – 7 p.m. in the Wilshire Auditorium for a presentation and book signing of his memoir Illegally Yours during a week of campus events planned for Undocumented Student Action Week. Illegally Yours is this year’s One Book, One College selection.
The One Book, One College program was revived this year in collaboration with the First Year Experience program, Grads to Be Program, and Innovations for Men of Color program. The One Book, One College program invites students, faculty, and staff to read a common book and unite around community discussions and campus events. The groups have each adopted Illegally Yours as part of each of the program’s suggested reading. Illegally Yours is a memoir highlighting the author’s immigrant experience in the United States.
“It’s a great honor that my former community college is now sharing my story across campus. I attended Fullerton College while undocumented and never shared my status with anyone. I hope this book helps educators understand the unseen challenges some of their students may be facing, and I hope students find laughter and room to dream within these pages,” said Augustín.
Rafael Augustín was the Fullerton College Commencement Speaker for the Class of 2023. He currently serves as CEO of the Latino Film Institute (LFI), where he oversees the Youth Cinema Project, the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF), and LatinX in Animation. Previously, he was a writer on the award-winning The CW show Jane the Virgin. Growing up, Augustin did not see himself represented in film or television. He took it upon himself to make that change.
