Hornet Journalism Students Take Home Awards
Two Fullerton College journalism students took home honorable mention awards at the annual Journalism Association of Community College’s Southern California Regional Conference Saturday, Nov. 14 at Fullerton College.
The Hornet’s Managing Editor Stephanie Lara took home the recognition for on-the-sport news photo and Hornet Opinion Editor Sara Espiritu took home her recognition for on-the-spot opinion writing.
Students who competed against their peers in the various categories had to photograph and/or write about a specific event at the conference and then complete the assignment and submit it in a short amount of time.
“I’m very proud of our students who competed,” said Jay Seidel, journalism professor. “They represented the school and the program very well.”
Students and journalism professors from 19 community colleges in Southern California attended the one-day event, which was comprised of competitions and workshops in all areas of the journalism field. Ten students from FC attended the event, most foregoing the competitions to focus on attending the various workshops.
This was the first time the conference was held at Fullerton College. In previous years it had been a two-day conference held at Cal State Fullerton. However, with the university currently remodeling the Titan Student Union, the association had to find a new location for the conference. FC was the best facility to host it.
“It was great that we could host it,” Seidel said. “Every instructor present commented on how beautiful the campus is and how great the facilities are. ”
