Huerta Joins Virtual KinderCaminata | ¡Sí Se Puede!

Fullerton College’s annual tradition of hosting kindergarteners on campus will be a virtual gathering this year, and civil rights icon Dolores Huerta joined in the fun! Her famous slogan, “¡Sí Se Puede!” (Yes, we can!) has been the theme of KinderCaminata since it was established at Fullerton College in 1994.

In a typical year, more than 1,500 kindergarteners visit Fullerton College and enjoy hands-on activities throughout the campus. Each year, KinderCaminata celebrates the life and lessons of Cesar Chavez by introducing kindergarteners to activism, college, and careers. While that could not be possible in person due to the pandemic, the event is being offered to local school children in an original video. KinderCaminata’s video will be sent to three school districts and more than 70 classes and will be available to the public this year on the college’s YouTube Channel.

In the video Huerta, who famously partnered with Chavez in cofounding the national United Farmworkers Association which later merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee to become the United Farm Workers, shared inspiring words with her young audience. Among her many accolades for her lifelong devotion to civil, labor, and feminist rights, Huerta received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama in 2012.

In addition to Huerta, KinderCaminata features interactive video experiences with Fullerton College faculty and staff and greetings from Fullerton College President Dr. Greg Schulz and Assembly Member Sharon Quirk-Silva.

This year, kindergarteners, teachers, and parents were also provided with an activity coloring book about community leaders, careers, as well as the life of Chavez and Huerta.  More information and can be found on KinderCaminata’s website.
