Journalism Earns Top Honors at JACC Southern Regional Conference

Two of the three student-produced publications received top honors of General Excellence at the annual Journalism Association of Community Colleges’s Southern Regional conference on October 19 at Cal State Fullerton.

General Excellence is awarded for the overall content and quality of a publication. The Hornet received the award for Online General Excellence and Inside Fullerton received the award for Magazine General Excellence.

“Theses awards help recognize the hard work, time and energy the students put in to creating content and managing the staff of these media outlets,” said Journalism professor and Hornet advisor, Jay Seidel.

Journalism students John Buzdar and Jackie Valdez received third and fourth place honors (respectively) for their articles in Inside Fullerton magazine.

Graphic design student Flor Nunez received two honorable mention awards for her designs on the student magazine Inside Fullerton.

The conference brings together journalism students from community colleges as far north as Bakersfield down to colleges located just before the Mexican border. The publications were recognized among approximately 28 other community college publications.

Next up for the students will be the JACC annual conference in spring, which brings together all of the community college journalism programs in the state.
