Journalism students at Fullerton College won top honors for their work on campus publications, The Hornet and Inside Fullerton Saturday, Sept. 29, at the annual Journalism Association of Community Colleges Southern California Regional Conference at California State University, Fullerton.

The Hornet won the Online General Excellence award and Inside Fullerton won the Magazine General Excellence award. Additionally, Daniel Guerrero, last semester’s sports editor, took first place in the Sports Story category for an article on a Hornets basketball game. Guerrero transferred to San Diego State University this semester, according to journalism Professor Jay Seidel.

One student, Michelle Lobato, also took honorable mention—fourth place—in an on-the-spot news writing competition during the conference. Lobato is new to Fullerton College, having graduated from Anaheim High School in May, Seidel said.

The professor attended the conference with seven students who the judges complimented for their skillful production of the campus publications, Seidel said. “I’m so proud of the hard work they put in and excited about the fact that they get the opportunity to earn recognition outside of campus,” he said.
