LiveWire Open Mic Next Week
The second edition of Fullerton College’s literary journal LiveWire launched and is available online. The spring issue features a nine-piece compilation of poetry, spoken word, fiction, and non-fiction stories combined with audio, soothing musical elements, vivid photography, and dramatic artwork, each created by students, faculty or community residents.
The community is invited to a launch party on Wednesday, April 15 at 7 p.m. in Building 200, Rooms 224-228. The event will feature an open mic reading by the authors and a gallery exhibition by the artists published in the journal. The medium-blending collaboration of writers and artists uniquely creates the very essence of LiveWire’s mission: “to foster the growth of the creative writing and artistic community in and around the campus.” The spring issue challenges readers to dive into the journal’s artistic adventures, laugh along with the humorous tales, and reflect on the dynamic personal stories of each writer and artist.
Created by the Humanities Division in coordination with the English Department at Fullerton College, LiveWire first appeared in printed form in 2013 during the college’s centennial year celebration. It was so well received that faculty advisors chose to continue the journal with a more collaborative effort by pursuing an online version that would extend beyond the campus. With this goal in mind, advisors for the journal sought out the expertise of other online journal publications and modeled LiveWire after the Deloitte Review, a world-class, award-winning business journal published by Deloitte University Press. With guidance of Jon Warshawsky, publisher of the Deloitte Review, FC faculty advisors were able to develop an authentic, professional publishing process and final product – the second issue of LiveWire. “Fullerton College is very grateful to Mr. Warshawsky for his guidance. It has made LiveWire a much more powerful learning experience for our students on every level,” said English Professor Amada Walzer.
“Our vision for the future of the journal is that it will not only be a wonderful opportunity for NOCCCD students to publish their creative work and learn about the publishing process, but that it will also help us strengthen the connection between Fullerton College, Cypress College, the surrounding community, local businesses, and beyond,” she added.
Plans are in order to publish two issues per year, fall and spring, and for a print-on-demand feature to be added to the website for added convenience. Students, faculty and the community are encouraged to submit their work by April 30 for consideration in the fall 2015 issue.
