Mindfulness Program Honors First-Ever End-of-Year Celebration

Mindfulness Professor, Deidre Hughes, along with the MIND Program’s Hornet Tutors, facilitated the Mindfulness Program’s first-ever end-of-year celebration. The celebration honored students with heartfelt remarks and sentimental activities, such as potting your own plant- a symbol of personal growth.

The Mindfulness Program at Fullerton College celebrated its first-ever end-of-year celebration, gathering over 60 students to honor those who completed the program’s courses over the academic year.

Attendees included prospective students interested in the program, current students from online and in-person classes, faculty, colleagues, family and humanities division staff. The event featured exciting activities, recognitions and community.

Students simulated breathing exercises with bubbles, shared encouraging messages, as well as meaningful moments with Buzzy.

Born out of the Mindful Growth Initiative, the Mindfulness Program was established in 2020 by Mindfulness Professors, Deidre Hughes, Valerie Tuttle and Amy Garcia. The first and only of its kind in California, the Mindfulness Program aims to support student retention and success by equipping students with the inner resources to combat personal challenges. The program has been successful, with increased research on mindfulness from other institutions and inspiring others to begin following Fullerton College’s example.

The program offers students two general education courses: The Practice of Mindfulness and Self-Compassion (MIND 101) and Mindfulness in Everyday Life (MIND 105). Both courses are experiential in nature and include opportunities to practice awareness experiences in the classroom. They also integrate the development of somatic awareness, which refers to understanding the mind, body and heart. Read more about the courses on the program’s catalog

In fall 2025, the Mindful Academic Program will launch their new Mindfulness Certificate, a nine-to-11-unit certificate that will create a path for Fullerton College students who wish to demonstrate proficiency in mindfulness, self-compassion concepts and practices to pursue their personal, professional and academic goals.

The Mindfulness Program’s end-of-year celebration demonstrated its growing community and the importance of compassion and well-being.
