Natural Sciences Seminar Series Presents Queer in STEM
The last Natural Sciences seminar for the fall semester 2015 will be presented by Dr. Allison Mattheis, Assistant Professor of Applied and Advanced Studies in Education at Cal State, Los Angeles on Tuesday, Dec. 8 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in Building 400, Room 410. Dr. Mattheis’s will present her seminar, Queer in STEM: A National Study of LGBTQ Experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
This presentation will introduce findings from the first large-scale study to investigate the experiences of professionals working STEM fields as researchers, faculty and advanced graduate students who identify as LGBTQ. Data was collected using a mixed methods approach through an online survey, follow-up open response questionnaires and individual interviews.
Dr. Mattheis earned her BA in Environmental Studies at Oberlin College (1999), an MA in Educational Administration (2009), and a PhD in Educational Policy and Leadership at the University of Minnesota in 2013. Her publications include educational research on teaching anatomy and physiology, and policies and practices related to educational cultures and climates.
Students who attend the seminar may also attend the Meet-the-Speaker Pizza Mixer from 5 :30 – 7 p.m. in Rooms 224-8.
