New ESL Certificates Help Students Demonstrate Mastery of the English Language
The Fullerton College English as a Second Language (ESL) program has launched two professional certificates to help students demonstrate their English skills for their employers, academic endeavors and other opportunities.
Whether a student’s primary goal is to earn a degree, transfer to a four-year university or bolster their English language development, these new certificate tracks now meet their needs.
“In the past, many of our students have asked if they could get a certificate from our program to show at work for possible job promotions, incentives or to satisfy a requirement for another academic program locally or abroad,” said ESL Professor and Department Coordinator, Jefferson Tiangco. “We’re excited that we can finally award these certificates to our students and celebrate their achievements with their family and friends at our future certificate ceremonies.”

The new certifications are in the following areas:
- The ESL Certificate of Proficiency in Academic English recognizes proficiency of English language abilities in academic listening, speaking, reading and writing at the college level; recommended for beginning and intermediate level students.
- The ESL Milestone Certificate of Achievement: Pathway to Transfer provides students with mastery of English reading, writing, critical thinking and speaking skills to succeed in any professional or academic setting where English is the dominant language; recommended for advanced level students.
New, current and most notably, former students are eligible for certificates based on completion of classes and requirements. To learn more about the certificate process, all new, current and former students can contact their counselor or esl@fullcoll.edu.
“When I came to the United States eight years ago, I knew very little English. So in 2020, I decided to take ESL classes, and it was the best choice I ever made,” said ESL student, Mirna Bajjour. “Thanks to this college and all the professors, I can now understand, speak and write English. It has also helped me in my work. I have become better at communicating and speaking confidently with people, and I will continue my education at Fullerton College even if it takes many years.”
