Rising Scholars Center Hosts Inspiring Grand Opening Ceremony
The Rising Scholars Program at Fullerton College recently opened its center with an exciting ribbon-cutting ceremony. Located in Building 100, Room 127, the new Rising Scholars Center is a space for formerly incarcerated and system impacted students to flourish and get the support they need to succeed.
The ceremony started off with music, food and an opportunity for guests to connect with one another. Remarks were given by Rising Scholars Project Manager, Ieisha Kitchen, Ethnic Studies Department Chair, Dr. Ziza Delgado Noguera, as well as Rising Scholars staff Claudia Morales and Valerie Burgess.
“The most inspiring part of the Rising Scholars Center Grand Opening was seeing the space come alive with energy, connection, and a true sense of belonging.” said Kitchen. “Witnessing students, staff, faculty, and community members come together in celebration truly reinforced the support and importance of creating a dedicated space for Rising Scholars. It was powerful to see the impact of this program reflected in the students’ excitement and the strong support from the campus and community.”
The event also invited guest speaker Director of the Underground Scholars Program at University of California, Berkeley, Danny Murillo. From being formerly incarcerated to giving back in higher education, Murillo’s story left many inspired.

Housed in the Department of Ethnic Studies, Rising Scholars offers registration assistance, textbooks, mentorship, personal empowerment and more. All together, these services help the college’s formerly incarcerated student population navigate higher education systems and accomplish their academic and personal goals.
The Rising Scholars Center is now open and ready to continue making big strides for our students. Learn more about the program’s eligibility, professional pathways and more on its website.
