Sexual Assault Awareness Offered Throughout April
Fullerton College will join many communities around the nation in recognizing April as National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Several activities and events will be hosted throughout the month to help raise awareness among college students about sexual assault and violence against women and men. The campus-wide events are open to the entire FC community and are designed to educate, encourage, and provide access to a network of support.
On Monday, April 9 the Cadena Cultural and Transfer Center will host guest speaker and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Susan Leavy who will lead an Intimate Partner Violence Prevention Seminar from 12 – 1 p.m. in Room 224. The seminar is designed to help students identify the early signs of an abusive relationship, the cycle of intimate partner violence, and steps to take to recognize it and stop it. Leavy is a returning guest speaker to Fullerton College. She holds a Master of Science in Counseling and teaches psychology at Cal State Fullerton.
On April 11, the Student Health Services will host their annual Spring Health Fair from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on the quad. The fair will provide students with an opportunity to connect with health-based organizations, learn about health resources including those related to sexual health, and will have a chance to receive free or low-cost health screenings.
A Walk in Her Shoes and The Clothesline Project will both return to the list of 2018 Fullerton College SAAM events on April 17 on the quad. A Walk in Her Shoes challenges men to take a one-mile walk in women’s shoe to raise awareness about violence against women. Several male instructors, administrators and students are expected to participate. The walk begins at 12 p.m. To participate email Jodi Balma at JBalma@fullcoll.edu.
Meanwhile, The Clothesline Project will transform the trees in the quad to resemble a clothesline with hanging T-shirts. The T-shirts provide a canvas for people to express their emotions about sexual assault and violence using art. The Clothesline Project will be displayed from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information contact Kelly Nelson-Wright at knelsonwright@fullcoll.edu.
In addition, the Fullerton College community is encouraged to support National SAAM Day of Action by wearing teal on April 3 in solidarity against sexual assault and violence. SAAM is an annual nationwide campaign coordinated by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. This year the national campaign’s theme is “Embrace Your Voice.” For more information visit www.nsvrc.org/saam
