Social Justice Week to Raise Awareness on Marginalized Communities and Issues

Fullerton College keeps the dialogue going for social justice issues.

Student Life and Leadership and Associated Students will host Social Justice Week from March 28 through April 1. The week-long event is an opportunity to strengthen connections with the campus community and cultivate a culture of diversity, equity, inclusivity, and anti-racism.

The week intends to welcome and challenge the Hornet community in various learning activities, events, and dialogue through a social justice lens.

Albin Lee, Project Specialist for Associated Students at Fullerton College, led the charge for creating this week of programming along with Rianna Mendoza and Jeffrey Costales. Lee, Mendoza, and Costales are all graduate interns at California State University, Fullerton.

This is the first time Student Life and Leadership and Associated Students are hosting an event of this magnitude to bring awareness to social justice issues.

“We want to provide an opportunity for our Hornet community (students, staff, and faculty) to raise awareness on marginalized communities and issues,” said Lee. “We want to continue creating opportunities for critical learning and engagement through the lens of what social justice means for different identities and social issues.”

As the keynote speaker, Dr. Kevin Nadal, professor, psychologist, and activist, will kick off the week. Dr. Nadal is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at both John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the Graduate Center at the City University of New York. He is a leading researcher in in understanding the impacts of microaggressions, or subtle forms of discrimination, on the mental and physical health of people of color; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people; and other marginalized groups.

Lee and his colleagues are excited to bring this week-long event to the campus community. “Social Justice Week aims to raise our critical consciousness and empower individuals as we cultivate a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism,” said Lee.
