Speech and Debate Competes at CSUN Robert Barbara Invitational

Fullerton College sent 15 competitors to participate in the CSU, Northridge Robert Barbara Invitational on Friday, Nov. 10 to Sunday, Nov. 12.

Students spoke on a wide range of contemporary issues from clean water filtration to humanitarian aid to South Sudan over three days of intense competition. Students from 24 colleges and universities participated in the three day tournament, including CSU, Fullerton, Arizona State University, and San Francisco State University.

Tournament highlights include a top three finish for the Hornet policy debate team of Danielle Hyslop and Osvlado Coutino, who were debating national health insurance policy.  Jonathan Kim ranked fifth place in the poetry division with his piece on immigration. Adding to the successes, three policy debaters finished with top 10 speaker awards, including Harut Kejejyan and Natalie Sutka. The Hornet Parliamentary debate team posted wins over Southern Utah University, Pasadena City College, and El Camino College to name a few.

The team resumes competition again on Dec. 2 to 3 at the Pacific Southwest Forensics Collegiate Association Fall Championships tournament hosted by Moorpark College. The Fullerton College Speech and Debate team is coached by Jeff Samano, Toni Nielson and Jeanette Rodriguez. Students interested in joining the team in the spring of 2018 should enroll in Communication Studies 138.
