Staff Development Wins Award for Culturally Responsive Training

Fullerton College’s Staff Development won the California Community College Council for Staff Development (4CSD) Innovative Activity Award for their Culturally Responsive Training for Faculty event coordinated by Staff Development Coordinator Jeanne Costello.

The California Community College Council for Staff Development announced the award at the annual 4CSD conference in Claremont from Oct. 12–14.

The Culturally Responsive Training for Faculty event included two breakout sessions for Spring Flex Day 2020. In preparation for the training event, Costello recruited Culturally Responsive Training Team Members who would lead “train the trainer” sessions. The team worked with Dr. Shaun Harper, Director of USC’s Race and Equity Center, for a two-day training to help develop the breakout sessions.

The first session was titled “Working Toward a Welcoming and Racially Inclusive Environment for Students.” Each facilitation team customized the second session for their division, which focused on culturally responsive and inclusive practices, including managing implicit bias, avoiding microaggressions, and concrete strategies for creating welcoming and inclusive classroom environments.

Spring Flex Day 2020 kicked off with a keynote presentation from the USC Race and Equity Center’s Education Director Dr. Sumun Pendakur designed to provide the rationale for each division’s work in the two breakout sessions.
