Study Abroad Program Changes Student Lives
The North Orange County Community College District Study Abroad program is one of two community college programs in Orange County that offer study abroad. The program offers students of all backgrounds the opportunity to go overseas for select courses while learning new cultures, gaining global awareness, and fostering a strong sense of independence and confidence.
“Our Fullerton and Cypress College students benefit from participating in the Study Abroad program by developing their soft skills, learning to problem solve and being adaptable.” said Administrative Assistant, Carina Valencia, “Students who participate in these academic programs stand out from students who have not studied abroad when applying for transfer to a four-year university or when applying for job opportunities. Many of our students come back transformed from their experience of studying abroad.”
The Study Abroad program has grown significantly since the 2023-24 academic year. Last year, we sent 66 students abroad, while this year, the number has increased to 108.
“Living in another country and meeting others broadens students’ understanding of global issues, fostering cultural sensitivity and empathy.” said Study Abroad Coordinator, Angela Henderson. “Students return valuing diversity on another level. This experience alone breaks employment barriers, giving them an edge in job opportunities since employers seek students with international experience and a global awareness.”
In 2025, the program will offer students the opportunity to complete select courses in Portugal, Costa Rica, Ireland, Italy and England. Information sessions are also available, which provide students interested in studying abroad the opportunity to connect with faculty leaders, explore course offerings and learn about travel logistics.
This past summer, the program offered a Career Technical Education (CTE) path in auto manufacturing and welding. Students traveled to Berlin and Munich, Germany for 10 days and visited several automobile companies. Because of its success, the study abroad program will offer another CE opportunity in spring 2025 that will focus on architecture. Participating students will travel to Florence and Rome, Italy, during spring break and visit the Colosseum and other sites of interest to learn more about the architecture of those places.
The Study Abroad program’s success is a collective effort from our campus and district community and the Friends of Fullerton College Foundation. The program invites faculty, staff and the community to its wine pairing fundraiser from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15. For ticket prices and more information, visit the fundraiser website.
