Sustainability Takes Center Stage at FC Fashion Event
Sustainability is making a fashionable statement at Fullerton College. Fashion design students are upcycling and recycling materials to combat the rise of fast fashion and bring awareness to sustainable practices in the fashion industry for their latest fashion show – Digital Fashion Event.
The second annual Digital Fashion Event, presented by the Fashion Department, will showcase students’ spring semester fashion projects on a special website set to launch on May 2.
Millions of tons of clothing, shoes, and other textiles end up in landfills every year due to very little being recycled. This year, students’ work will reflect the “Out of the Landfills” theme and focus on environmentally friendly ways of upcycling and recycling. The goal is to create garments from deadstock, end-of-rolls, damaged clothing, or repurposed textiles that would have otherwise ended up in the landfill.
Students have designed garments that showcase sustainability and will take the viewer on their design journey with sketches, photographs, and videos. Other students have researched alternative ways to be sustainable and are submitting digital content.
