Fullerton College Theatre Arts faculty member Mela Hoyt-Heydon, received an Ovation Award nomination for Costume Design for her work on Cabrillo Music Theatre’s 2014 production of Memphis. The production also received six other nominations including Best Production of a Musical, Lead Actor in a Musical, and Director of a Musical.
The Ovation Awards are awarded each year by the LA STAGE Alliance, a non-profit arts service organization dedicated to building awareness, appreciation, and support for the performing arts in Greater Los Angeles. The Ovation Awards will take place on Nov. 9 at The Ahmanson Theatre.
When asked what it means to her to be nominated for lead costume designer, Hoyt-Heydon said, “It takes a village to design a show and this nomination really goes to my entire team of stitchers and cutters. Thanks for making my designs come to life!”
Hoyt-Heydon has been working in professional costuming and make-up since 1976 for companies including Disney, Warner Bothers and a long list of local and international theatre companies. Her designs have been seen in film, TV, theatre, commercials, print advertising, theme parks, pageants, and a variety of independent clients. Hoyt-Heydon began her FC teaching career in 1980.
