April Events Bring Awareness of Sexual Assault

Faculty and students will lead Fullerton College in conversations and activities to speak up and stand against sexual assault during Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in April.

The Clothesline Project and A Walk in Our Shoes will return to Fullerton College on Tuesday, April 19 from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on the quad. The Clothesline Project transforms the trees in the quad to resemble clotheslines carrying T-shirts with messages from men and women expressing an emotion related to sexual violence. The clotheslines serve as both a healing component and a method for advocacy.

A Walk in Our  Shoes raises money for and awareness of sexual assault and domestic violence prevention. The event challenges men to take a one-mile walk in high heels to raise awareness about violence against women. Students and staff are encouraged to participate in the following ways:

  • Volunteer – Put on high heels and walk the quad to demonstrate solidarity with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
  • Spread the word – Encourage students, teams, or clubs to participate
  • Donate shoes – Size 9 and above high heels
  • Donate to the cause –  Waymakers provides sexual assault victim services, counseling, and advocacy for victims of sexual abuse

In addition, the Ethnic Studies Department will host Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) Awareness and Action Week, April 18 – 22. The planned events will include a pop-up art installation featuring the photography of Fullerton College alumnus Nicole Merton. Witness a stunning display in honor of MMIW during the Clothesline Project for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
