2 Students Receive Prestigious Study Abroad Scholarships
Two students, who will study abroad in Seville, Spain, have been selected to receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Gilman Program works with universities and colleges across the U.S. to encourage and support applicants from public, private, two-year and four-year institutions.
Cypress College student Ninonka (Pamela) Inoue and Fullerton College student Evelyn Venegas are two out of nearly 1,500 undergraduates from across the U.S. to receive this prestigious scholarship. The NOCCCD Gilman scholars will soon embark to Seville, Spain for their Spring 2023 study abroad program. The Gilman Program broadens the student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. Since the inception of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program in 2001, over 130,000 applications have been received and over 36,000 scholarships have been awarded to students participating in study abroad programs and internships around the world.
In addition to the Gilman scholarship recipients, five Fullerton College students were also awarded a study abroad scholarship.
Words from Students
“I am excited to partake in this journey to explore a new culture and challenge myself as a student,” said Inoue who is a business administration major. She hopes to obtain new skills that will allow her to become a well-rounded professional in her area of study.
Venegas is a nursing major who plans to transfer into a nursing program in fall 2023. The Gilman Scholarship has allowed her to study abroad. Spain is an opportunity for her to practice her Spanish and learn about the Spanish culture.
Alia Scroggins said she was fortunate to receive a scholarship toward the Spain Study Abroad program. “This experience I believe will help me widen my eyes to a different culture and ultimately help me fulfill my goals of helping others. I cannot wait to depart in February and come back a citizen of the world,” the law major said.
