Fullerton College Awarded $1.12M for Math, Engineering, Science Achievement Program

Fullerton College has received $1.12 million from the California Community Colleges to establish a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Center to advance their skills through the Math, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) program. The STEM Center, slated to open in the fall of 2024, will help propel students in underserved and underrepresented groups toward calculus-based STEM fields.

“We are so excited about the new opportunities that are coming,” said Dr. Bridget Salzameda, Dean of Natural Sciences. “MESA funding will allow us to expand our existing programs and truly support students for one-of-a-kind experiences.”

Students will have access to a dedicated STEM space for research projects, academic support and hands-on experiments both on- and off- campus. The renovated space, to be housed in room 1246, will be dedicated to STEM with room for research projects, academic support and hands-on experiments.

Furthering its commitment to equity, the funding will help recruit students belonging to underrepresented groups from the Fullerton College community. The award is also set to expand partnerships with K-12 schools, four-year universities and industry and national STEM programs.

The Natural Sciences Division took the lead to apply for MESA funding to create a centralized program space for the STEM Center. The funding will also help the Natural Sciences Division to continue coordinating and collaborating with other campus resources that support MESA objectives including STEM-related clubs, the Academic Support and Tutoring Center, Counseling and Student Development Division and other instructional STEM divisions on campus.

The funding will provide opportunities for students to collaborate and build a community to persist in STEM majors and ultimately STEM careers.
