Drone Technology Launches First-Ever Study Abroad Experience
The Department of Drone Technology at Fullerton College is now accepting applications for its first-ever study abroad experience in Sydney, Australia. An exciting opportunity, this experience will feature DRON 115 – Aerial Imaging and Storytelling.
“Sydney offers students a real-world, global experience that goes far beyond the classroom. Students will operate drones under international aviation regulations, capture cinematic footage in world-class locations and produce professional-quality films for their portfolios,” said Professor of Drone Technology, Jay Seidel. “But more importantly, students will build the skills needed for the workforce, including adapting to new environments, problem-solving in the field and more. It’s not just a class; it’s an international experience that will help our students compete in today’s global industries.”
DRON 115 will teach students about drone photography, image capturing and Australian culture. It will also feature presentations by filmmakers and content creators, as well as tours throughout the city. Students will also have the chance to photograph some of Australia’s scenic landscapes, including beaches and the Blue Mountains.

As the first drone technology course to study abroad in the history of Fullerton College, Seidel has made great strides in its curriculum. Recently, he cultivated a dynamic partnership with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) of Australia to bring more dynamic experiences to students.
In December 2025, Fullerton College launched its Bachelor of Science degree in drones and autonomous systems. The first bachelor’s degree at the college and west coast, this innovative addition honors a robust curriculum that blends theoretical learning with the hands-on practice necessary for the fast-paced workforce. Students pursuing the degree can expect to cultivate a strong foundation of technical skills through flight operations, advanced sensor technologies, autonomous platforms and more.
“The world our students will be working in over the next 10 to 20 years will look much different,” said Dean of the Fullerton College Technology and Engineering Division, Kenneth Starkman. “An experience in Australia will provide students with global literacy skills and unique technical understandings, how to implement a project in another country, solve problems across borders and much more. Leadership development is also a key strategy for our learners, and this opportunity will impact each student for the rest of their lives.”
A proud part of the bachelor’s degree, DRON 115 is an elective course that counts towards degree credits.
The trip is set to take place during Wintersession 2026-27, with students traveling Jan. 6 through Jan. 27, 2027. The deadline to apply for the opportunity is Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026.
