50th Annual Jazz Festival Embraces Local Musical Talent
The 50th annual Jazz Festival at Fullerton College was held for a weekend of performances, competition and education.

The festival invites a variety of middle and high schools to perform and promote the joy of music education. The Fullerton College ensembles also perform while faculty and guest artists offer clinics for all who attend. During student performances, onsite judges provide feedback and suggestions.
This year, student musicians were invited to more than 12 workshops and master classes on various topics such as improvisation, instrument and vocal technique and style. Designed to enhance the skills of musicians at all levels, these sessions help establish Fullerton College as a worthy and desirable College.
Many of the festival’s event staff were Grammy-nominated jazz musicians. Their involvement was an effort to ensure that participants receive top-tier instruction and mentorship. Some of these special guests included Aaron Janik, Matt Hall, Teryn Carter, Dakota Noxon, and Fullerton College alumni, Mario Jose.

“One of the most inspiring aspects of the Jazz Festival at Fullerton College is witnessing the transformative moments when students acquire new skills. The festival’s educational approach not only nurtures talent but also fosters a deep appreciation for jazz music,” said Jazz Studies Coordinator and Faculty, Dr. Bruce Babad. “The Jazz Cadré—our faculty jazz group, delivers inspirational and show-stopping performances on both nights of the festival. Their exceptional musicianship and passion for jazz serve as a powerful motivator for students, demonstrating the heights they can achieve with dedication and practice.”
The faculty Jazz Cadré is comprised of the following faculty members:
- Bruce Babad (saxophones and flute)
- Matt Johnson (drums)
- Lyman Medeiros (bass)
- Mike Scott (guitar)
- Jamie Shew (vocal)
- Jeremy Siskind (piano)
The Fullerton College Jazz Festival is one of the Fine Arts Division’s efforts to spread the joy of music throughout our local communities. For students looking to embark on a career in music education or performance, the festival is a great opportunity to connect with those in the industry and more.
