Transfer Center Hosts Open House as CSU and UC Application Season Begins

One of the most common questions asked at the Fullerton College Transfer Center is “When should students start thinking about transfer?”

Talk to any staff member at the center and the answer is always, “As soon as possible.” In fact, it’s recommended that students begin visiting the Transfer Center within their first year at Fullerton College.

“Visiting the Transfer Center in their first year will help them understand what’s involved in the transfer process and get them connected early-on to services offered specifically for first-year students, and Canvas cohorts available after the first year. Once connected, they’ll be fed information regularly depending on their intended year of transfer,” said Transfer Center Coordinator Vincent White.

White said the transfer process can be a bit complicated, often due to changes in CSU and UC applications, deadlines, and just an overall understanding of how each individual student’s educational plan falls into the transfer process.

To help with this, the Transfer Center will be hosting an Open House on Thursday, Sept. 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Building 200, Room 212. Students are invited to stop by to see the new layout of the Center and learn about the many resources the Transfer Center provides.

At the end of last spring, the Transfer Center underwent renovations to improve the layout of the center, changing the location of the front desk, adding more computers for students to complete university applications, creating a dedicated and convenient space for counseling appointments, and adding more space for the addition of two permanent staff members. The center is also the new home of the Honors Program.

“The Open House will be an opportunity for us to re-introduce all of the wonderful services the Transfer Center provides,” said Transfer Center Director Cecilia Arriaza. “It’s also just in time for the CSU and UC application season to begin.”

The California State University and University of California systems will be accepting applications for fall 2023 transfer beginning Oct. 1 through Nov. 30, however, the UC application has been open since Aug. 1 for students to begin preparing for the application process and drafting the Personal Insight Questions in advance of the submission period. This is known as “Application Season” and one of the busiest times at the Transfer Center, Arriaza said. “Students should be aware that waiting to submit the applications until Nov. 30 is not advised.”

The Transfer Center has created a variety of workshops and opportunities for students to get help completing applications, learn about resources and scholarships, and meet with counselors. White said the Transfer Center will also be re-introducing college fairs this year. A fall College Fair is planned on Oct. 19 during University Application Rush Week (Oct. 17 – 21).

“These are just a few events we’re excited to re-introduce to the campus this year,” said White. After being mostly online the last two years, White said many more transfer events and opportunities will be available in person this fall. The Transfer Center will also continue to offer workshops in remote formats, for those students who are taking classes online or prefer to access resources from home.

The College Fair on October 19 will have more than 35 university representatives and the Transfer Center plans to host workshops throughout the week to encourage more students to get connected to Transfer Center services.

In the meantime, students transferring next year can start accessing information and services by joining one of the Transfer Center’s Canvas cohorts. Canvas cohorts are available for Mid-year/Spring 2023 transfers and Fall 2023 transfers. And for a full list of upcoming events and workshops visit the Transfer Center Calendar.
